The C.A.L.M. Method

Drawing on 25+ years of personal mindfulness practice, Nathan developed the C.A.L.M. Method: a practical framework that helps people slow the pace of a demanding job long enough to respond with steadiness instead of reactivity. Compassion, especially self-compassion, sits at the center of the method as a foundation for sustainable wellbeing.

Background and Values

Nathan's work with organizations also draws on his background leading culture and inclusion initiatives at scale. As Diversity Program Manager at Oregon Metro, the regional government for 25 cities based in Portland, OR, he managed the agency's Diversity Action Plan and designed a professional development curriculum reaching over 1,000 employees in its first year. Earlier, in higher education, he led diversity and inclusion programming as Senior Assistant Dean of Admissions & Coordinator of Multicultural Recruitment, then Director of Inclusion & Multicultural Engagement, at Lewis & Clark College.

Compassion, equity and belonging are core values in Nathan's work: he believes a genuinely well workplace is one where people of all backgrounds can do their best work and be seen for who they are. These values run through his organizational programs, offered alongside the mindfulness and communication skills at their center.

What Participants Say

“Participating in the Karuna training awakened a deeper understanding of compassion as both a personal practice and a collective practice. I learned that compassion is the alchemy that transforms suffering, yet its greatest systemic enemy is the perpetuation of violence. As a therapist, I often use the fight-flight framework to help clients regulate, but today a new concept emerged—what if we approached personal and communal suffering through the lens of compassion? Nathan's teachings, infused with insights from Ruth King and Resmaa Menakem, left me grounded and inspired to embody compassion as a pathway to healing and justice.”

Series participant: Freedom Through Heart Practices

“I loved the sessions. Nathan is a great teacher/leader. I never thought I could meditate or be able to focus more, ever, but here I am, thanks to the sessions. I also love how Nathan tied mindfulness to inclusion and equity, quite an innovative and effective strategy. I appreciate his methodical approach and could sense that he has extensive experience doing this. I highly recommend this course and will share with my staff”
